The awards were presented at a ceremony on 18 November, attended by FABRICA at the biggest event for new home builders alongside 1,700 industry professionals.
City Wharf’s warehouse style architecture won Gold in the ‘Best Exterior Design’ category. Away from the high-rise residential glass towers that dominate London’s City Road, City Wharf’s striking weathered steel façade and warehouse style brick and timber features represent the relationship with its urban industrial history. Judges were impressed by the architectural narrative and how the design does not attempt to be traditional, and in some respects, seeks to celebrate the society and technology of its time. The architectural language is a good example of how well-established, traditional spatial layouts, the street and the square can be fused with more contemporary experimental façade design that has meaningful architecture to echo the story of the site’s interesting heritage.
City Wharf was also awarded Silver in the ‘Best Apartment Scheme’ category where the judges considered the interiors, exteriors, relative price and overall quality of the shortlisted entries. City Wharf’s well-designed apartments are larger than the usual minimum standards with bespoke design details combining a mix of urban and industrial influences that provide a focal point to the kitchens, bathrooms and communal areas. Despite being so central, there is ample parking space and plenty of secure bicycle storage.
